In 1980s rural China, a widow raises two sons alone. Both get into top colleges, but only one can go—so they draw lots. The younger rigs it; the elder steps aside to work. Years later, the elder builds a fortune. The younger hides his poor roots—and at his wedding, denies his own mother to her face.
