Poor villager Liu Jinshui falls for Ling'er, whose father rejects him for his poverty. When Liu digs up a jade pendant etched with mysterious markings, his grandfather warns it is cursed—but Liu refuses to return it. Strange events follow: dead livestock, nightmares, and snakes in the night.
